Weekly national charts, as the trade papers printed them

FOR WEEK ENDING JANUARY 1, 1977
HOT 100SINGLES
100 positions ← 12/25/76 01/08 →

Billboard printed no chart dated January 1, 1977. Its year-end double issue covers the weeks of 12/25/1976 and 1/1/1977 and carries one Hot 100 for both, so this week is the 12/25 chart standing a second week — every rank and bullet as the archive has it there, with LAST WEEK, 2 WKS AGO and WKS ON CHART moved on by one. Billboard’s own chart history counts the frozen week the same way: the 1/8/1977 issue’s LAST WEEK column points at it, and weeks on chart and weeks at No. 1 both include it.

Bullets and Hot Shot Debuts before 1980 are inferred from the chart's movement, not read off the page: a bullet for a record that is new, back, up on last week, or at last week's rank for the second week running; the Hot Shot Debut is the week's highest new entry. The first Hot 100, 8/4/1958, has none.
