Weekly national charts, as the trade papers printed them

R&R Country · January 11, 1985

50 positions ← 12/22/78 01/18 →

The magazine printed this chart’s ranking and its bullets, and no last-week column at all — and for a different reason from every other such week in this archive. Elsewhere the column is missing because the magazine skipped the issue between Christmas and New Year. Here the column had not been built up yet. The magazine starts a year’s history columns from nothing and adds one a week as the weeks accumulate behind it — this archive’s 1978 pages do exactly the same thing in January on all three of the magazine’s charts, so it is a habit of the paper rather than anything that began here: 1/11 carries none at all, 1/18 carries Last Week, 1/25 adds Two Weeks beside it, and from 2/1 the page settles at Three Weeks, Two Weeks, Last Week for the rest of the year. So no record on this page can have a last-week figure: there was nowhere to print one. The page is otherwise trended in full — 39 of the 50 ranks are bulleted and eight BREAKER markers are printed — so this is not the no-trending case the Country chart opens some later years with. The proof that the ranking is sound is on the next page: 1/18’s single Last Week column reads 2, 3 and 9 for Oak Ridge Boys, Conway Twitty and Mel McDaniel, exactly the ranks those three hold here.
