Weekly national charts, as the trade papers printed them

R&R Country · January 13, 1978

40 positions ← 12/23/77 01/20 →

The magazine printed this chart’s ranking and its bullets, and no last-week column at all — because in January 1978 the column did not exist yet. The magazine built its chart history up one column a week as the weeks accumulated behind it, and it did so on all three of its charts at once: 1/13 carries no history at all, 1/20 carries a single column, 1/27 adds a second beside it, and from 2/10 the page settles at Three Weeks, Two Weeks, Last Week and never changes again. So no record on this page can have a last-week figure: there was nowhere to print one. The page is otherwise trended in full — the bullets are printed on it exactly as on every other week — so this is not the no-trending case some later years open with. The Country page heads its one new column with a date rather than a count of weeks — 1/20 prints 1/13 over it, which is this page — and the figures under it read 2, 3 and 7 for Johnny Paycheck, Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris, exactly the ranks those three hold here.
